A home health aide is a member of the allied healthcare services and offers home care for veterans. They assist the veteran in daily activities that allows independent living. The HHA is not a nurse, but rather caretakers who are supervised by a registered nurse to help assist the Veteran with their specific living needs.

What Will a Home Health Aide Do for Me?

A home health aide can assist in several ways. The services they render differ according to the needs of the veteran. Veteran home care can consist of, but is not limited to the following:

  • Assists the veteran with Activities of Daily Living (ADL). This can include, bathing, meal preparation, and light housekeeping.
  • Transports the veteran to and from medical appointments.
  • Accompanies the veteran to social outings or other recreational activities.
  • Assists in transportation to family and friend get-togethers or milestone events like weddings and funerals.
  • Joins the veteran in their hobbies and interests and assists them in performing them safely.
  • Engages in conversation and activities designed to build mental and emotional stability and health.
  • Performs light duties that are difficult to do alone due to mobility issues such as laundry, dusting, vacuuming and meal prep. The needed veteran home health aide care can be as comprehensive as needed.
  • If the health aide is a Certified Nurse’s Aide (CNA) they can bathe the patient, change dressings when instructed by the RN and perform certain medical duties like colostomy bag draining, etc.
  • VA home health care aides can administer diabetes management and medication reminders if they are certified to do so.

    • Yes. All enrolled veterans are eligible for home health aide care, as long as you are eligible for community care and your disability status meets the needed requirements.

 

  • What Services Are Included?
    • As we listed above, you will be assisted with all Activities of Daily Living. These include assistance with out of the home errands, entertainment or to appointments everyday or several days per week. Whatever it is that you determine you need, can be discussed as part of the plan.

  • How do I apply for VA home health aide care in Northern Virginia?

    • To apply for veterans benefits for assisted living and nursing home care there are serval steps. These are only the basic steps. Please refer to the VA office to answer any specific questions you may have about your unique situation.

  • Identify your needs. Speak with your doctor and find out what type of help they suggest and you feel you need.  Ask yourself- what are the things you need help with the most? How long would you need a health aide for, and for how many days per week? Do you need a live-in caretaker or someone to drop in a few days as week? Is your need more medical than custodial?
    • Determine what your status is according to the VA: They’ll assess this by referring to your previous records. Questions like- active duty or reserves? Which branch of the military did you serve in and what length of tour of duty? All further information needed can be found on the DD-214 form you received when you were discharged.
    • Check out all of the available resources so you can create a plan that works best for you. You should refer to the VHA and VBA about in-home care for veterans. They’ll assist you in the filing for benefits. The state of Florida, like all states, have advocates for veterans.
